Charles Iremonger
Charles Iremonger was born in 1898 at Panton, near Wragby, where his father Charles William was a horseman at Grange Farm. Charles was the oldest boy of 6 children.
By 1911 the family had moved to Bassingham, where the father was a farm foreman.
During WW1 Charles joined the Lincolnshire Regiment, before transferring to 6th Battalion Leicestershire regiment. He died of wounds, aged 20, on 1st November, just 10 days before the armistice. It was during the final advance in Picardy and the battalion had been involved in the Battle of the Selle in the previous few days. By then his parents had moved to Scamblesby (in the Lincolnshire Wolds, near where the father grew up).
It’s not clear what Charles’ connection with Claypole was, but it is assumed that he was living in the parish before he joined up
