George Grundell
John Thomas and Mary Grundell were from East Yorkshire. In the 1890s they moved from Beverley to Temple Bruer. In 1901 they were at Westborough (probably Westborough Gate Lodge) where the children went to Dry Doddington school. After John Thomas died in 1908 Mary and the younger children went back to Temple Bruer to stay with James. She later moved to Rauceby. The children were:
James Henry born c 1884 Beverley Parks
John William born c 1886 Beverley Parks
George Thomas born c 1893 Beverley Parks
Alice born c 1897 Temple Bruer
Herbert born c 1902 Temple Bruer
John joined the Army before the First World War and was in India in 1914. He later served in France and Salonika and was awarded the Military Medal. He died in Rauceby in 1949.
George may also have joined up before the war (probably 1912). He served with 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. This regular battalion arrived at Le Havre with the British Expeditionary Force on 14th August 1914 and were in action a week later at the Battle of Mons. During the winter George was wounded in action but returned to France in early 1915. In mid Feb 1915 1st Lincolnshires were sent to poorly-held section of the line near Ypres. At one point the Germans were behind them, and even in the same trench. In mid March they were in the Hill 60 sector. George died of cerebro-spinal meningitis on 22nd April 1915 at 6th Stationary Hospital at Le Havre and was buried at Ste. Marie Cemetery.
George is listed on the war memorial in North Rauceby. Mary died aged 92 at Lodge Farm Cottages, South Rauceby in 1952.
